How to build a pergola for a hammock?

Question by hazgirl80: How to build a pergola for a hammock?
I would like to build a pergola for hanging a hammock in the back yard. Can anybody tell me if 15ft is correct on how far apart the posts/beams should be to hang the hammock? It seems really wide to me.

Answer by bkstgzillgod
Let’s start by figuring out the length of the hammock
6 foot for the usable area of the hammock
2-1/2 to 3 foot on each end for attachment
So right now you have 11-12 feet across
so if you put the posts 10 foot apart,
you will lie on the hammock like a slice of melon, by the time it stretches out
Go to a hammock store to help figure the needed area for the posts/hammock
You might find it easier to buy a hammock stand and place it in your pergola

What comes first the pergola or the pavers?

Question by fh: What comes first the pergola or the pavers?
I don’t do many projects and I’m about to start one, but I was wondering if there is an order of how to do it. I am putting pavers and a pergola. What should be done first?

It would seem that the pergola should go up first. But, it should be sized such that the pavers fit without having to cut them or whatever. For example, if the pavers are 1 foot wide, make sure the distances between the posts of the pergola are in 1-foot increments.

The reason the pergola should go up first is that you’ll have to dig a lot to set the posts. And, you don’t want all of that loose dirt to get all over the new pavers.

Awnings: Electric and Manual Awnings

The mounting interest in garden awnings has sparked a new market for awnings. These awnings can be purchased at a fair price and can be self installed by any person with a knowledge of home improvement. The scope of awnings can, however, stifle first time buyers. Hopefully this will help those new to the market looking for more information.

The simplest answer is to look into a manual awning. These awnings make use of retractable arms and a winding handle. The awnings can be projected to the desired level. Manual awnings are suitable for most homes and are highly cost effective. Once you have mounted the brackets to the wall, the awning can be lifted onto them. More than one person will be required to lift the awning considering awnings can be quite weighty. The awning is then complete and ready for use.
Electric awnings are very similar but require a little knowledge of wiring in order to connect the awning motor to a power source. The awning still needs to be lifted onto the pre-fitted brackets, however, the process of connecting the motor to a mains will make extra work. The benefit of the extra work is visible when you can make use of the mains switch rather than the winding handle. Whilst slightly more expensive, electric awnings are much more convenient.

The awning, once installed, should be durable enough to last for several years. Taking good care to keep the awning out of the rain and excessive wind will of course prolong the lifespan of the item. The awning fabric, will survive light rain and wind but will deteriorate if not tended to when necessary. Waterproof awning covers are obtainable for protection during the nastiest weather whilst replacement fabrics are also an option should the existing fabric fall victim to foul weather.

Most suppliers sell replacement parts for when repair is in order. All required operational parts should also be available including wind, sun and rain sensors, alongside a range of spare awning covers should you choose to change the colour of your awning.

Primrose London is one of the leading suppliers of patio awnings in the UK. We stock and supply a full range of electric and manual awnings in a variety of colours and sizes.
